1. After the San Francisco earthquake in 1906, wealthy families .......... with each other to create grand gardens.

2. William Bourn had an estate built for his wife, son and twin daughters, just 30 miles south of San Francisco surrounded by .......... acres of formal gardens.

4. Bourn hoped to make the creation of Filoli his life-long project and refuge. However .......... . After suffering astroke in 1922, he could only view the gardens from a wheelchair.

5. His wife, daughter and son .......... him in death. The family is buried on the estate.

6. After his death in 1937, the estate was sold to the William Roth family. Roth was .......... with the gardens, experimenting with growing camellias.

7. Mrs. Roth wanted the flowers to resemble a .......... of color, each flower just a shade or two different than the next one.

9. Because of Mrs. Roth's generosity and vision, visitors can now stroll on guided tours through 16 acre gardens of huge varieties from exotic plants to .......... flowers.
